With the festive period upon us, it is easy to forget that the Canny Photographer’s auction season is about to begin. Once the mince pies foils and empty port bottles head off for recycling, many folk decide now is the time to clear out stuff and the period up to Easter tends to feature a surplus of thing appearing in auctions or second hand sites while many buyers are actually of the game trying to pay off the festive overdraft Continue reading 7 Cult Classics To watch out for in January Auctions

Yashica Microtec Zoom 70 – Sizzling shooter ?
Yet another mid 90’s compact from Japan (aka Kyocera Lynx 70) but oddly the first I’ve come across with a professional period review. Popular Photography thought this and its Zoom 90 sibling sizzled and favourably made comparisons to the still legendary and elite Yashica T4. But 2 decades on how does it measure up ? Continue reading Yashica Microtec Zoom 70 – Sizzling shooter ?
Zooming into the 90’s ?- Pentax Zoom 90 Review
Pentax arguably gave the world the first AF Zoom compact with their IQZoom series. But how do cameras like the Zoom 90 bear up in the 21st century and even against their own 90’s successors the Espio series ? Continue reading Zooming into the 90’s ?- Pentax Zoom 90 Review
Never mind the Minitar – The (Lomo) Zenit 35F Review
The Mintar-1 lens is probably most synonymous with the love it or hate it Lomo LC-A. But a variant pops up on a simple fixed focus compact that Lomo foisted upon us Brits, the forgotten Zenit 35F. Continue reading Never mind the Minitar – The (Lomo) Zenit 35F Review
Cheapskate Photography – The Irresistible Allure – Guest Post by Dan James
Being a cheapskate generally means buying the least expensive option available. Or not buying anything at all. Plus, surely going for the cheapest nearly always means settling for the poorest quality ? Continue reading Cheapskate Photography – The Irresistible Allure – Guest Post by Dan James
Bad penny done good ? – Pentax P30 Series Review
The Pentax P30 series (P3 in the US) is often not at the top of the SLR shopper’s list. But these models are actually quite capable, abet slightly flawed, and are a cheap way into the fantastic K mount series. Continue reading Bad penny done good ? – Pentax P30 Series Review
A Retro too Far -Halina PET Review
This quirky retro looking Haking number actually dates from 1962 not the 1950’s. I’ve no idea what PET stands for either but this Haking oozes more individualistic retro style than its more infamous sibling the Leica lookalike the 35x. Continue reading A Retro too Far -Halina PET Review
Superheadz White Slim Angel vs Lomography La Sardinia – Guest Review by Al Mullen
I thought that I would compare these two cameras since they are both newer and have the same wide focal length of 22mm. There are other differences between the two, but you might not want or need to have both. They both have many variations and names for the same camera – for my sake I will refer to them as the ones listed. The White Slim Angel is a copy of the popular Vivitar Ultra Wide & Slim. Continue reading Superheadz White Slim Angel vs Lomography La Sardinia – Guest Review by Al Mullen
Halina Micro 110 redux – Processed and reappraised
If you read my original Micro 110 review you’ll know I sounded a bit disappointed. One factor I’d wandered about was the processing. I persevered and shot another cartridge and got it processed by the good folk at Digital Photo Express in Carlisle. The results really made me reappraise the camera as well as processing and Lomography Tiger CN200. Continue reading Halina Micro 110 redux – Processed and reappraised
Hidden bargains of the second hand camera market – Guest Post by Hamish Gill
I recently found a Samsung ECX1 in a pawnbrokers in town for £2.99. I do a little circuit of a few of these shops as well as the charity shops if I’m ever in town with a little while to spare. Once in a while something I’ve been watching out for on eBay appears and I’m forced to snap it up. The Samsung ECX1 is just one of those cameras. It’s also the type of camera I think of as a bit of hidden bargain. Continue reading Hidden bargains of the second hand camera market – Guest Post by Hamish Gill
