The Lo-Fi camera no one asked for has risen from the grave. Having been effectively cancelled by legal action in 2024 the Cappy camera is weirdly back but only if you live in the US or are happy to fund Jeff Bezos. But what does this tell us about the Lo-Fi digital market ? And does the Cappy have a home in it if it’s half decent ?
Disclaimer – there is a link to amazon.co.uk on this post that I get paid commission from. Doesn’t cost you any more any more and you can just get there yourself. I have previously been allowed to demo beta filters for camp snap and have recently been approached to review the Flashback ONE35 V2. In those reviews I express my own thoughts and I’m not paid to do so.
Howdy Partner. Is this a fallout thing ?
Ah new here aren’t you.
You’re thinking of Nuka Cola world’s mascot Cappy. That bottle cap rascal has yet to appear on the TV series and has zippo to do with this Camera
So tell me about Cappy Cameras and what happened
Once there was an freebie give away camera made by IKEA called the Knappa that was given out to selected customers back in 2012 to launch their new PS collection.

That camera is quite hard to find but would serve as the basis of the Paper Shoot camera, the godfather of screenless lo-fi digital cameras wrapped up in a swappable eco-friendly body, selectable filters and more recently a video mode.

But in the early days outside Asia and enthusiasts, Paper Shoot wasn’t well known. The team based in Taiwan did a great job at camera design and manufacture but struggle at marketing and global issues like distribution.
So they reached out for global partner for redistribution and a couple of Canadian took on the role of being their N. American distributor . They would go on to be the supplier to other markets including the UK and Italy. And whatever you think of them they did a good job on the socials of promoting the camera arguably just at the right time as the Lo-Fi digital market really took off.
So What went wrong and where does the Cappy Camera come in ?
So tensions seem to have arisen between Taiwan and Canada. There’s a lot of claim and counter claim that went on when thing went south which I covered before. What was unarguably the case (and excuse that pun) was that Paper Shoot N.America had started to sell non Paper shoot Taiwan made accessories like cases and tote bags.
And then there’s the question of when the Cappy Camera was born. Was it developed when the companies had a locked in exclusive deal ? I couldn’t possibly comment but it seem pretty ready when thing went south
The companies parted ways pretty acrimoniously.
And then the Cappy got announced shortly after toward the end of 2024
So what is the Cappy Camera
Oh it’s a screenless lo-fi digital with eco-friendly swappable cases and switchable filters and a video mode. The company promise an exchangeable filter option (like Paper shoot they have a sim slot – funny that) but they don’t sell any cards yet.
Hand on sounds like….
My lawyer reminds me to point out the above gif.
Well it does have a built in flash. An LED flash (uggg)
What happened next
So Paper Shoot sued under the US trademark legislation (aka Lanham Act) before the camera was launched (Paper Shoot Technologies Inc. v. 2763072 Ontario Inc. et al).
Can’t think why.
And that seemed to be that. Cappy Camera was pulled before it shipped.
But the case ended in a voluntary Dismissal with prejudice in August last year. This means the case has been dismissed and can’t be raised again. Paper Shoot withdrew their case. This usually happens due agreement between parties. We don’t know if a deal was made or Paper Shoot didn’t think they could win.
But I did notice certain camera returning to my socials early this month.
So I can Pick one up ?
If you live in the US of A – no problemo. Clearly living in the spray tan man’s dream has allowed you early access to this. Not so the rest of the world (including ironically Canada – assuming it’s the same folk)
But the item has been place on amazon meaning for a small global shipping fee, you can get one. I’ve one working its way towards me which probably means I’ll be contributing to Jeff launching another washed up 90’s star into space soon.
So they’ll be up against the likes of the Camp Snap Pro ?
Yeah given Cappy seems to go all in for the Camp Snap on their website. It may be part of the settlement was pretty much to say nothing about Paper Shoot which arguably fill the intend niche better. You’ll not see those words mentioned although an early blog tries to price compare against the “leading rival”
But Camp Snap has become the Lo-Fi to beat so fair do you’ll want to gun for them (if you can’t gun at your niche rival)

Cappy blog which features some of the most Ai written pieces I’ve seen which haven’t even been proof read (read their What makes cappy cameras different.. post which loops the same text ad nauseum at the end). But they gun for Camp on a reasonably well written post. But the language is cunning noting they have an option for swappable filters via card (glossing over the fact all camp snap models can use user definable filters which you can create online) and that the Camp Snap Pro has a filter ring (so yes it will take accessory lens plus a massive range of commercially available optical filters
So it’s priced the same as the Camp Snap Pro ?
You’d think it would be in the ball park…
So the market has heavily changed. Camp Snap Pro probably can be seen as the upper tier of the current crop. It offers switchable filters in a quality faux leica like body and you can even customise your filters. It doesn’t have a movie mode but smh..
And the Camp Snap Pro cost $99USD (currently discounted to $84). before postage . That latter price is £64 in the UK before postage & taxes (adds about £20). And it’s got a host of new wannabies with similar features around that mark. Cappy seem to have missed that this camera has standard filter screw as well in their marketing (or perhaps deliberately ignored that point, but I couldn’t possibly comment)
So you’d think that what Cappy go for similar
Nope It’s $155USD before postage. They aren’t offering UK shipping but Amazon will send you one for around £145 at the time of typing (the price fluctuates due to currency exchange). That includes postage
Yup about £50 more. Granted you get a 20MP and movie mode , but a worse flash and no current swappable filter options unlike the CS Pro.
Now oddly they’ve fixed similar to price of the Paper Shoot….
Yeah they’re not trying to imitate are they….
So what does this mean for the Lo-Fi Market and the Cappy Camera
Personally I think we’re hitting saturation point in this market. Some have predicated the bubble bursting but I think it’s likely to go the way of the Lomo/Lo-Fi analogue market. It’s hear to stay as a more mature market which will ebb and flow.
And it’s competitive. I’m sat on a few cameras I need to get reviewed and even more are coming soon. Screenless hasn’t even be the zeitgiest of the last year, cheap but quirk cameras have. These include the Chuzhao, a TLR like vintage number and last years lo-fi in demand Reto’s Kodak Chamera. This tiny screen camera captured retro vibes with it’s instamatic vibes. Although this ended up being heavily inflated by demand you can now pick up for under £35 from reputable photog suppliers about what you should pay for a Chuzhao.

And whilst Gen Z seem happy using these they’re as happy buying vintage digicams for inflated prices or basic modern Digicams. JL imaging’s Kodak PixPro range have dominated the resurgent compact camera market, with 4 out of the top 10 models made by them in 2025. The other cameras on that list are all consumer not prosumer focused models

And any Fallout from this
Well shoot…
We’re seeing victims to this maturity. Both cameras name retro Snap have fallen. The small Y4000 rebrand The Retro Snap stopped sales as apparently US tariffs hit its bottom line. And it’s name sake the Retro Snap whilst limping on seems to be clearing stock. It’s demise was due to rushing out a frankly crap camera pissing off folk who bought. And although the revised camera was way better (notably winning my most improved camera of 2025).
The damage was done

Shame as it’s okay and at it’s clearance price of £30 represent fantastic value.
And weirdly that for me is the issue here.
Why a doomed Camera might spell disaster for the Cappy Camera ?
The images I’ve seen taken by the cappy don’t look hugely better than the Retro Snap. There are a few online. I’ve not tested one myself in fairness (but will soon). Now given Retro snap V2 won an award from m e you might think that’s a good thing
Retro used to cost about £65. That was a little pricey given betterrivals but hey !
But the Cappy cost over twice that (almost 5 times the current price)
But it’s niche
Yeah that niche is filled by Paper Shoot which costs roughly the same (less at the mo). Granted the Cappy video mode is more accessible and you get a LED (yuk) flash built in but the Paper Shoot has a loyal fan base and unlike the Cappy does have the filter kits in the room
It also does something special with the filters, over a decade has led to paper shoot having that soft feel. It’s almost film like but Cappy just has a fairly standard gamut that you can get on a £30 rival.
So…. ?
Now in fairness, I’ve not tested this camera. That is likely to be resolved pretty soon, so everything I’m commenting on is based on Cappy’s promo pics and limited images on amazon reviews & Reddit. I’m always willing to give things a chance but…
